I have an old work table that once belonged to my grandfather and today I finally got the itch to start refurbishing it.

Plans are to add wheels and replace the wooden top with a piece of 1/4" sheet steel so I can also use it as a table when welding. The wheels will be welded to the plates then bolted through the holes in the feet of the table. The wheels are from Harbor Freight, the scrap steel from work and the paint stripping wheel is courtesy of my local Lowes store.

After using the stripping wheel I've applied one coat of primer to the legs of the table.

Still have to apply a second coat of primer before painting then it's wheels and locating a 1/4" thick piece of sheet steel for the top.

Thanks Don & Jim :beers: I have a second coat of primer on the metal, the metal plates cut to length and drilled for mounting bolts. The metal plates will be primed & painted after the wheels are welded to them which I hope to do this weekend.

Notice a problem with my wheel selection????........The tab for the locking mechanism won't allow for full rotation of the caster.....
So off to Harbor Freight I go with the mounting plate and bolts in hand and I found a solution....bigger casters without locks to clear the mounting bolts.....

Temps have been in the mid to upper 20's here this weekend so I didn't work on the table but I did locate a local source for the 1/4" steel for the table top....cost $175.00. Temps should be warmer next weekend to allow me to work on the table again.

Great work David, nice to see pre-loved equipment being refurbished rather than being tossed and replaced.
Is having no locking wheels going to be a problem at all?

Thanks Ken :beers: The attempt to use the locking wheels was just for peace of mind so I wouldn't worry about the table moving and hitting something like my John Deere riding mower while I'm using the table. I guess I'm resolved to using a redneck brake a.k.a. a short piece of a 4 x 4 at the wheel

Made some progress on the work table this afternoon. Before welding the wheels to the plate steel I bolted the plate to the foot of the table then clamped the wheel to the plate to minimize any warping from the welding...........

I tacked each corner of the mounting surface of the wheel, allowed the tacks to cool then made the remaining welds........

Not the best looking welds but I'm learning more each time I burn gas & wire

I managed to get one coat of primer on all four of the plate/wheel assemblies today & tomorrow I'm gonna spray a second coat of primer then it's color time.....I'm thinking a gray or black Hammertone finish would look nice  I hope to have the 1/4" steel for the top in a couple of weeks.

I wish I could consistently put down welds like yours, I'd be a happy camper then.
